Premium Tax Credits
A detailed walkthrough of how income-based subsidies lower your monthly premium and annual deductible — and how to avoid the two biggest repayment surprises.
Premium tax credits are the heart of why Marketplace coverage is often far cheaper than the sticker price suggests. If your household income falls between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level for your household size, the government limits what you're expected to pay toward a Silver benchmark plan to a percentage of your income — and covers the rest with a tax credit.
The credit is calculated using a 'benchmark' Silver plan in your area, not the cheapest plan available. That's why a Bronze plan can end up costing you very little or even $0 per month after the credit. The size of the credit depends on your household income, household size, ages, and zip code — not on the specific plan you pick.
You can take the credit in one of two ways. The most common is to apply it to your monthly premium as you enroll, which lowers your bill right away. Alternatively, you can pay the full premium during the year and claim the credit as a lump sum on your tax return. Most people prefer the monthly advance because it puts cash back in your pocket throughout the year.
The credit is an estimate based on the income you project for the year. If you earn more than you estimated, you may owe some of it back at tax time; earn less, and you could get more. There are limits on how much you owe back based on income, so you're never on the hook for the entire amount — but it pays to estimate accurately.
The two biggest repayment surprises come from getting a raise mid-year without updating your Marketplace account, and from moving households without reporting it. Updating your projected income as soon as things change — not waiting until tax season — keeps your monthly credit accurate and avoids a large tax-time surprise.
Because the math depends heavily on your specific income and family size, having an agent model a few scenarios is valuable. A small change in projected income can shift which plans and credits you qualify for.
